From time to time I will spotlight the work of other reedmakers. These reeds are available in limited quantities and at erratic times, and this is just an experiment. I do love the idea of offering YOU, the user, the choice of other reeds, and offering THEM, the reedmakers, extra visibility.
Currently Spotlighted: Jungmin Kim
Jungmin is an oboist based in Chicago, frequently gigging in orchestras around the Chicago area. She studied with Alex Klein at DePaul and is about to start a DMA at Boston University. Jungmin has explored various types of reed, from the European-style reed to American, narrow shape to the wide shape and is excited to share her experiences with fellow oboists!
Jungmin’s reeds are on premium cork tubes – Chiarugi 2+ and Loree. They are built on a wider shape than mine – Gilbert 1! But if you expect them to be big and loose and flat, think again – these reeds are beautiful, stable, warm, and really inviting to play. I have something to learn myself from these lovelies!
From the reedmaker: The reed is gouged on European gouger and shaped wide. It allows the performer to use more air and would not rattle, rather give you a solid foundation. Do not over soak it, since it works best on the close opening rather big, wide opening. If you accidentally soak it too much try press it down a little on the back of the reed when it is soaked. If you feel like the reed is too heavy, you can softly scrape on the blend to the tip and clip it till it crows a sharp C.
