English Horn Reed
Hand-made from start to finish. I wire my EH reeds to help regulate the opening – if you do not want the wire feel free to specify that. I also include rubber tubing to help to bind the reed to the bocal.
Strength: I strive for stability and a comfortable level of resistance in my reeds, with a relatively small tip opening so you can relax and blow instead of biting to manage the pitch. Medium is my own preferred playing strength, and there is more resistance to it than most commercial “Mediums”.
Sort of Scraped: This is a reed that is roughly scraped but not at all finished, and not wired. It’s my Day One scrape, basically, You won’t like the way this plays right out of the box, but it’s a great start for those wanting to practice reed-making or to customize their own reed. I have removed the bark, clipped the reed open, and put in a long, thick tip and a semblance of windows. It vibrates and probably has a stiff, heavy crow. The rest is up to you!
Blank: This is simply gouged, shaped cane wound on a tube. It meets my regular specifications – i.e. I could turn this into a reed and sell it. Guaranteed not to leak! The blank is ideal for those who are making their own reeds but have little time for the preliminary work of gouging, folding, shaping and winding, or those who have been dissatisfied with the inconsistencies of some commercially available cane.
